Just to qualify...when I said "point of no return" I mean as far as being involved with other countries, not Iraq...although I think no matter who's president, we're going to be there for a while, just hopefully not in the numbers we're there right now.

Yeah...unfortunately we're kind at the point of no return now, for better or worse (worse, obviously). I agree it completely sucks. The good thing is, I think McCain and Obama are both smarter than Bush and will actually, you know, listen to the right people (read: not Donald Rumsfeld), about what needs to be done. Let's hope the majority of these things can be resolved without bloodshed. Obama's going to win though, so all I'm hoping is that he does what's necessary and best for the country and situation even if isn't popular with his base.

The main reason I've even thought about voting for McCain is his experience, I will say that.

This involvement in other countries though just drains our economy and kills our soldiers and I can't think of a better decision that could be made than to get the hell out, especially considering THERE WASN'T A REASON TO BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

And that said, I will also give McCain my respect if he is elected and hope for the best.

With regard to checks and balances blah blah blah:
With things like economic turmoil, the time it takes to make changes is crucial and means the difference between someone having a job or not. Granted, it's usually not a good idea to have a government that can make a lot of things go their way in a shorter amount of time, but this is probably one of the best possible times for that. That said, economic analysts would rather have Obama at the wheel than McCain (http://www.economist.com/world/unitedstates/PrinterFriendly.cfm?story_id=12342127).

Also, a lot of Western European countries make necessary policy changes happen a lot faster than they do in the US, hence beating us to freeing slaves among almost every other major advance in civil rights. It's not always a bad thing.

I would also note that administrations are ALWAYS trying to fix or bend the controversial policies of the party reigning before them, and right now there's a shit-ton of fixing to do. It'd be nice to have the ability to do it without wasting more time.

You told me when we talked that if it hadn't been for Sarah Palin it might have been a tough choice for you, so you have to relate somewhat, right?
There's a lot of things, but I guess my main thing is his stance and history on defense. I don't think Obama would be disastrous in this area like some people seem to, but I think McCain would be better. I worry that, as an anti-war candidate, Obama might be beholden to the voters to not make the kinds of decisions that should be made. I think McCain's fight for the surge in Iraq and rallying against torture shows that he can make strong and smart executive decisions that don't toe the party line. Like it or not, we're involved in a lot of shit around the world that probably isn't going to be easy to deal with, and with Iran, Pakistan and Russia on the horizon, it isn't going to get easier any time soon. I just think McCain could do a better job if the now cliched 3 am moment arose. I think McCain is more prepared and knowledgeable than most people in the senate and he'd do a better job. Is he perfect? Far from it. I just fine him slightly better in the areas that concern me than Obama.
That said, an Obama presidency will have my full support and I hope his administration is successful.

I may not be articulating it well, and I may not be on to anything at all, but I definitely don't understand why you are a McCain supporter. Or a McCain voter.

I don't think I understand your last point. I agree it was beyond detrimental, but I fail to see how the same thing by a different party would be at all good. They're not just going to reverse everything and leave it at that, unfortunately.

Yeah well some was taken from our conversation but I've had that exact conversation with at least two other people, and both of them at least told me that they though that Barack Obama actually would be the better choice.

And Republicans have spent the better part of the past decade controlling the White House, House and Senate, which has been beyond detrimental, so I can see nothing bad coming from a full Democratic set, considering there's little to no difference anymore.

This was way too serious. After tomorrow's over I hope we can work on a metal remake of Flaming Lips' "Clouds Taste Metallic" which I dub "Clouds Taste METALLICA."
