Books
Just so you know from where I draw inspiration:
Currently, I’m reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, finished 3/10/08
Suttree by Cormac McCarthy, finished 2/18
Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer, finished 1/18
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, finished 1/06
White Noise by Don Delillo, finished 11/15
Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, finished 10/25

Hey, have you read “A Confederacy of Dunces” by John Kennedy Toole? I can’t remember if we’ve talked about this. It’s my favorite book ever written, no shit.
How do you like Foer? I’ve been wanting to read his stuff but simply haven’t gotten around to it. I’m completely obsessed with David Sedaris (I quote his stories in my own head the way I do ‘Arrested Development’ out loud) and ‘White Noise’ is really disturbing and awesome. There’s my two cents.
I’ve now tried to make it through Confederacy of Dunces twice and not succeeded. The first time I made it about 30 pages, but in my defense I also had a major workload that semester. The second time I made it a little over halfway, and although I think there are aspects of it that are great, it wasn’t really doing it for me. Both times it was due back at the library and I didn’t have the will to renew it. I don’t know what it is that made me feel that way, but I know I’ll give it a chance again someday.
“Everything is Illuminated” is absolutely phenomenal in every way and I think I can say it’s my favorite book ever. I’ll wait until after you’ve read it to go on about how genius it is.
As for his second book, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” it’s a real let down, but somehow it seems to have gotten decent reviews. I’m about 4/5 of the way through and I don’t think it’s 1/10 as good as its predecessor. However, I will say that I still think he’s an awesome author and has awesome work ahead of him, but that his sophomore effort was simply him trying too hard. The creativity doesn’t back it up and it’s almost a rehashing of the first book.
